MISSION PLAN – THE TECHNOLOGIES, THE JOURNEY AND THE AIM

The Secrets of Asteroids for Planetary Defense

While it won't directly deflect an asteroid, the Juventas mission plays a critical role in planetary defense by acting as a scientific detective. How? Let's dive into the details:

The DART Experiment:
Remember the DART mission that successfully nudged an asteroid in September 2022? Imagine that as a giant push! Now, Juventas steps in to understand the effects of that push.

X-ray Vision for Asteroids:
Once released near the asteroid Dimorphos, Juventas will use its powerful "low-frequency radar" like a supercharged X-ray machine. This allows it to see deep inside the asteroid, revealing its secrets:

  • Solid or Spongy? Is Dimorphos a dense rock or full of cavities and loose materials?
  • Layering the Mystery: What's the inner structure of the asteroid? How is it layered?
  • Impact's Fingerprint: How did the DART impact change Dimorphos' interior?

Sending Radio Signals:
Juventas doesn't just look; it also listens! By sending radio signals through the asteroid and analyzing how they travel, scientists can learn even more about Dimorphos' density, size, and rotation.

Putting the Pieces Together:
This information from Juventas, combined with data from HERA and other missions, will be like completing a critical puzzle. By understanding the internal structure and composition of asteroids, scientists can develop more effective deflection strategies in the future, potentially saving Earth from future asteroid threats.

Think of Juventas as a key player in planetary defense, gathering crucial information to protect our planet. Stay with us as we follow this thrilling mission!
